Certificate in Agriculture (Level 5):
This course is suitable for people who wish to make their careers in farming and the agri industry. The course is very suitable for future farmers and for people seeking employment on farms. There is no minimum educational entry requirement but those who have completed the Leaving Certificate are likely to benefit most from the course. Applicants must be 17 years on 1 January after entering the course.
Students on the course will acquire skills and knowledge relating to soils and plants, animal and crop production, farm management, machinery, enterprise development and management, the environment, farm buildings, personal development and health and safety. About half the course consists of practical/skills training. Typically, students spend half of each day on the farm and workshops and half at classroom work. Computer applications is an important part of this course.
Student may choose a cluster of elective modules in one of the specialisms:
- Dairy production Drystock production Crop production.
Level 6 Specific Purpose Certificate in Farm Administration (Teagasc Green Cert):
Students who have completed the FETAC Level 5 Certificate in Agriculture are eligible for this course. Level 6 must be completed in order to obtain a qualification for farming. The course extends over 12 months and is delivered by a combination of on-farm practical learning course work delivered on benchmarking farms, and block release course work at the college, which amounts to four weeks. During the course, students operate their home farm to a farm development plan in conjunction with the college tutors. They must also carry out projects on their home farm. On successful completion of the course, students are awarded the FETAC Level 6 Specific Purpose Certificate in Farm Administration. This meets the training requirement for Stamp Duty Exemption and for other schemes.
Level 6 Advanced Certificate in Agriculture (Drystock Management)
Students who have completed the FETAC Level 5 Certificate in Agriculture are eligible to apply. Apply directly to the college. Selection of places is by interview, held in June/July. This full time course equips students with the husbandry and management skills to run a successful drystock farm. It also prepares graduates for further training in farm management, farm work abroad and careers in agri-industry. Students spend 20 weeks at the college and spend a further 12 weeks on-farm practical learning period on an approved host farm. On successful completion of the course students are awarded a FETAC Level 6 Advanced Certificate in Agriculture. Students who successfully complete this course met the training requirements for Stamp Duty Exemption.
